SKETCHBOOK

My trusted companion,

My sketchbook is my haven. I am not afraid to make mistakes here. It is my safe space for exploration where I record my deepest emotions, my a-ha moments, my observations of the world around me… my imagination runs wild here. Some rely on their iPhone Notes app to record fleeting thoughts, I carry my sketchbook wherever I go. It is my trusted companion.

I take a lot of inspiration from contemporary Chinese artist Liu Xiaodong. What I find really interesting about his art is his hash work. It seems so precise yet casual. The thickness creates a lot of power and life. This all while without beautifying anything, creates realism to show the stark truths about the world.

I love trying new techniques. I critique my own work so I can continue to grow. I love to see my progress and I always have fun.

Taking cues from sketchbook master himself, Leonardo da Vinci. My first anatomical study.

A piece using homemade paint: completely derived from real vegetables. Made with spinach, tomatoes and carrots… this piece is certified vegan.

A commissioned watercolor for a family friend’s cabin in Vermont. I originally came to my sketchbook to plan, but I was having so much fun I kept going.

Crawling off the paper. My mom did not like this one.

Dear Diary, I opted with a self-portrait to describe a stressful finals week.
